Scientists

We conduct research, education and training with the goal of reducing the burden of sepsis. The Gemini Centre for Sepsis Research has been established through  close collaboration between St. Olavs Hospital, Helse Nord-Trøndelag, NTNU and Yale University in the USA. In addition, we are funded by the Liaison Committee for Education, Research and Innovation in Central Norway (Samarbeidsorganet) between Helse Midt-Norge and NTNU and NIH. In 2018, we were awarded Gemini Centre status.

Arne Mehl, consultant in infectious diseases, laid the groundwork for the group. He began registering the clinical information of patients with bloodstream infections (BSI) and sepsis who had bacteria in their blood at Levanger Hospital in Nord-Trøndelag county in 1994, and at Namsos Hospital in 1999. In addition, the bacteria were registered and frozen. This has gradually become a large quality register (the BSI register) with almost 5000 registered cases of sepsis. Specialists in intensive medicine, infectious medicine, microbiology, epidemiology and genetics are now working with this material and on a number of other projects.
